NAMO TASSA BHAGAVATO ARAHATO SAMMĀSAṂBUDDHASSA!
Dear Fellow Meditators,
Have you ever Wondered why the sitting meditation that you do DIES in the cushion itself that is, why don’t you continue to get the benefits of meditation in your day to day life.
Let me explain to you as to why does this happen.
Because, you are seeing meditation as something DIFFERENT from your routine activities. You are creating a WALL between meditation and your LIFE or daily activities so to say; Whereas practically, You should MIX the two like milk and sugar, so as to get REAL BENEFITS from Meditation.
Now I ask you another question - Have you ever wondered why the SAME meditation should be given to DIFFERENT people with DIFFERENT defilements/ problems? Even Lord Buddha himself gave different meditation techniques to different people
For Example:- There are 2 persons A & B. A has more traits of anger while the B has more traits of fear. How can SAME meditation cure the problems of A &B. Ask Yourself? Is it possible?
To go deeper, why should EVEN the SAME person be given SAME meditation when same person suffers from DIFFERENT DEFILEMENTS at DIFFERENT times?
Let me elaborate using similar example
A person has anger at one time and fear at the other time. How can SAME meditation cure the 2 when the characteristics, causes of fear and anger are different?
A third question that I pose to you, is that, Have you wondered why you see the reactions in the body when these reactions are only EFFECTS and not CAUSES of fear/ anger/ jealousy. Which is generated where? in the MIND .
Let me corroborate this to you by a simple example
A person called Sid is suffering from fever and pain. Here, consider two situations
Situation 1: Sid Goes to a doctor A, who sees his symptoms of fever and pain and gives him paracetamol medicine(or maybe DOLO as its in fashion now) .This brings down his fever and pain
Situation Number 2: Dr B sees Sid’s symptoms of fever and pain and investigates the cause of these symptoms by getting his blood tests. He, then, clearly finds that the cause of his fever and pain is malaria. Dr B starts treating Sid’s malaria by prescribing him Quinine medicine.
Now see here what's happening. Sid is getting relieved in BOTH the situations.
However, in situation1, he is getting TEMPORARY relief, because as the EFFECT of paracetamol subsides, Sid will again get fever & pain.
Whereas in situation 2, Sid is getting PERMANENT relief. Quinine will not only cure Sid of fever and pain but also its ROOT CAUSE, malaria, PERMANENTLY.
Consider this same example from another angle:-
Now if Quinine is given to Sid when he suffers from jaundice. Will quinine work?? NO right!
Meditation is no different from MEDICINE .
“One size fits all” CAN’T be the way as far as meditation is concerned!
Most importantly, have you ever wondered whether your meditation is directed towards Nibanna or not?
You are lay people, you have a lot of responsibilities and very less time. In that less time that you have, if you don’t practice as per Buddha’s teachings, what will be the plight? Imagine! Just a waste of your time.
So, we all must ask ourselves –
Whether the meditation technique that I’m PRACTICING, is as per Buddha’s teachings which leads to NIBBANA, whether its focusing on the ROOT CAUSE of my DEFILEMENT, whether it is giving me PERMANENT benefit and whether its actually even dealing with my problem or I’m simply using the technique without even thinking!!
